The Problem

Bait and forage fish populations are critical for the health of the ocean ecosystem.  Overfishing, primarily for use as bait in lobster fishing has decimated these populations threatening a critical component of the  food chain.  This isn’t just bad news for fish but for all of us.

The Need

There is a critical need to find an organic alternative to baitfish.  Any alternative must be effective as a bait, economical for fisherman and have a positive impact on lobster populations.

The Opportunity

Lapis Locusta Investment Partners has joined with Breakwater Biotech to advance an effective and economic alternative to traditional baitfish. The Lapis-Breakwater solution, the Baitbrick,  is unique. it protects both baitfish and lobster populations and provides fisherman with an effective and economic bait source.

DIVE INTO WHAT DRIVES US

The Lapis partners have a combined X year history of investment in technologies and ventures which have had a positive impact on our world. We focus on funding early-stage ventures which address a significant problem and have a threshold level of validation. Current investment efforts are underway in healthcare, technology and, now with Breakwater, have the potential to significantly contribute to improving our environment.

Forage species are fish such as herring, anchovies or small invertebrates that are the major foodsource for larger predatory species.

They are also increasingly targeted directly by humans for fish meal, bait or other purposes.

It is estimated that

The impact of the decimation of the baitfish population plays out in two ways.

The first impact is on the ocean ecosystem.  Smaller forage fish populations make it difficult for larger predators to find food weakening individual animals and populations as a whole.

The second is the decrease in these baitfish populations has caused the price of bait to skyrocket threating the livelihoods of millions (???)   of fisherman throughout the world.

Lapis and Breakwater believe that we have a commercially viable  solution

Catch controls have come too late and without a regional or oceanswide strategy.
